The little garden
In the last blog about The Little Boat (TLB), I wrote about the gold engine, reclaimed steps and painting the outside. This little blog episode is about the garden. I do miss having a garden. We used to live in a terraced house and the garden was quite small, but it was lovely. Bri used to be a garden, specialising in hanging baskets and our garden always looked glorious in the spring, summer and autumn.
The Little Boat, has a lovely big back deck and I really wanted to have somewhere to sit that wasn’t on the towpath, away from the joggers and cyclists.
My mum had given me the blue planters, she had collected lots of them over the years, and had quite a few that were empty. I also wanted to be a bit thrifty on the plants, and to have bedding plants each year can be a bit expensive, so I planted some grasses, lupins and other perennials.
My sister gave me a lovely rose bush, called Mum in a Million, and that sits on the back deck, with beautiful pink roses. These are all pics from last year, and this year there are lots of buds on the rose bush, it is going to look so pretty.
After fitting the solar panels on the roof, I decided that there was enough space for a little roof garden, so Mr Perks made me a roof box out of left over decking boards, and it is fully lined. There are herbs in there, and I have just planted some tomato plants in for this years crop.
Last year I had tomato plants, courgettes and cucumbers. I made chutney with the tomatoes and courgettes - another one of my hobbies.
And here is a pic of the roof garden last year.
With a bit of imagination it is possible to create small gardens in small spaces. I am lucky that our Bri has green fingers, and can also make me things, like the roof box. I am keeping fingers crossed to a bumper crop of tomatoes this year, with plenty of herbs.
And to finish off this blog, here is a picture of Sidney, last summer, posing on the back deck of The Little Boat.
Thank you for reading about our small garden, I hope you enjoyed it, and I still have to write a blog on the inside of TLB yet - one for another day.
